There isn’t one right tool for sound sensitivity — what helps depends on whether someone needs to block sound out entirely, soften it, or simply know it’s coming. This article covers the categories of tools people use, without recommending specific brands.

Blocking sound out

Noise-cancelling headphones use electronics to actively reduce ambient sound, and tend to work best against steady, low-frequency noise like engines or air conditioning. Passive earmuffs (often marketed for shooting ranges or construction) block sound physically rather than electronically, and can be a good fit for a child who won’t tolerate the pressure or weight of over-ear headphones.

Softening sound rather than blocking it

Foam or silicone earplugs reduce volume across the board without cutting sound off completely, which some people prefer — they can still hear a teacher or a conversation, just at a lower intensity.
