Bedtime brings together several sensory triggers at once — a quiet room that suddenly makes every small sound noticeable, bedding and pajama textures pressed against skin for hours instead of minutes, and a body that’s being asked to power down right as the sensory day’s buildup is often at its highest. For a sensory-sensitive person, that combination can make falling asleep far harder than tiredness alone would predict.

During the day, a lot of sensory input is easy to move away from — step out of a loud room, change a scratchy shirt. In bed, the person is mostly still, in the dark, with fewer distractions competing for attention. That stillness can actually make ordinary sensations — a seam in a sheet, a hum from another room, the specific weight of a blanket — more noticeable, not less, right when the goal is to relax.
Adjustments that tend to help
Small, specific changes usually matter more than a general “wind down” routine borrowed from somewhere else:
