What sensory accommodations are common in classrooms?

Once a need is identified — through an IEP, a 504 Plan, or simply a conversation with a teacher — the actual accommodations tend to be small, practical adjustments rather than anything dramatic. This is a survey of the ones that come up most often.

Seating and movement

• Wobble stools, stability balls, or standing desk options instead of a fixed chair
• Seating away from high-traffic doorways or the loudest part of the room
• Permission to take a scheduled movement break rather than needing to ask each time

Sound and light

• Noise-reducing headphones during independent work or loud transitions
• Felt pads on chair and desk legs to cut down on scraping noise
• Reduced fluorescent lighting at a specific desk, or a lamp as an alternative

A place to reset

• A pre-agreed calm-down corner or hallway pass, usable without a lengthy request process
• A visual schedule at the desk, so transitions are predictable rather than a surprise

How these get put in place

Accommodations named in an IEP or 504 Plan are legally required once agreed. Informal accommodations depend on an individual teacher’s cooperation, which is why it helps to have them written down somewhere — even an email confirming what was discussed — rather than relying on memory alone.
